Free Zones
In Turkey,
the infrastructure of industrial operations has been considerably
improved throughout the country. At the moment five Free Zones are
operational and another six are under construction on the coasts
surrounding Turkey.
The Free
Zones Law which was enacted in 1985 produced its first results in
1987 with the establishment of the Mersin and Antalya Free Zones,
both along the Eastern Mediterranean Coast.
They have
been followed by two new zones in 1990, Aegean Free Zone and the
Istanbul Ataturk Airport Free Zone. In June 1992, Trabzon Free Zone,
on the Black Sea Coast, started commercial activities.
Activities
that can be performed in Turkish Free Zones are: manufacturing,
storing, packing, trading, and banking. Investors are free to
construct their premises while the zones have available office
spaces, workshops, or warehouses on a rental basis with attractive
terms. In free zones users enjoy 100% exemption from all taxes,
including corporate and income taxes, the possibility of selling
merchandise manufactured in the free zones to Turkey, a developed
infrastructure and superstructure, and a unique business opportunity
protected against strikes for 10 years from the establishment of the
Free Zones.
